Lina van Bussel (26) is an artist and art therapist working with painting and sculpture. Based in Tilburg, The Netherlands, she studied at St. Joost School of Fine Art, and graduated as an Art Therapist from HAN University of Applied Sciences.

Besides working in the field of mental health, van Bussel is dedicated to her ongoing artistic practice, showing visual work in various exhibition spaces as well as hosting interactive artistic projects and workshops.

Her visual work is characterized by vibrant colors and overwhelming, organic shapes that grow and expand. In her visual language, she explores a tension between attractive aesthetics and visceral textures, incorporating bulging, oozing elements reminiscent of slime or pustules. Drawing from sources like barbie movies and plastic pearls from childhood, as well as folk art and temple kitsch, she explores themes of desire, femininity, and the duality of seduction.

Van Bussel is currently exploring subjects of spirituality and senses of meaning, critically processing contemporary society’s obsession with wellness and the apparent lack of higher purposes.

Using subtle colour transitions and fluid shapes moving among more fixed structures, she searches for a harmony between surrender and control, both safe and alienating. Van Bussel aims to create an alternative space, another world to reside in, a place for wonder and introspection beyond the boundaries of concept.
